As any significant prize-giving event approaches, there’s always an outcry to include of new categories to honor unsung work and delight the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
- Another creative title received no nominations that year
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
- Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often small games, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
