Cyclone Melissa Gains Power As It Barrels In the Direction of Jamaica

Hurricane Melissa is predicted to escalate to a rare Category 5 storm as it shifts towards the Caribbean island, delivering dangerous sudden floods and rock falls.

The hurricane, which registered wind speeds of up to 120 miles per hour as of 6:00 AM GMT, is now shifting northwest in the Caribbean and is anticipated to hit the coast by midweek, according to hurricane specialists.

Advisories of power cuts and structural damage have been issued as the hurricane produces up to thirty inches of rainfall and storm surges as high as thirteen feet above ground. "Take cover without delay," locals have been urged.

This hurricane is the thirteenth hurricane in this year's Atlantic hurricane season, which usually concludes in late autumn.

A category five cyclone is the strongest type, with winds of at least 157mph.

Locals are being advised to fortify their houses with sand barriers and plywood sheets, and to stock up on basic necessities.

Alerts are also in effect for regions of the neighboring country including the primary urban center, the neighboring country and Cuba's eastern region, where the hurricane is anticipated to bring similar effects by the midweek period.

Landslides currently triggered by the storm have caused two deaths in Haiti, according to local authorities.

The hurricane is predicted to move across Cuba by the middle of the week before passing across the Antillas Mayores and out into the open ocean.

By the moment it reaches Cuba, it is forecast to have weakened to a category three cyclone.
