British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several entry passages down to the site... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our security, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
